Morocco Recovery Efforts
If you are able to support at this time please do and share these resources. Please share other resources in the comments
The horrific earthquake in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco will require immediate and long term support from governments, NGOs and individuals. Please consider giving if you are able. Thanks to writer Laila Lalami for sharing the first two resources focused on local NGOs and support outside of Marrakech. Also her books are excellent, I highly recommend The Other Americans and Conditional Citizens.
Banque Alimentaire du Maroc: Local NGO - Food Bank of Morocco- is well-regarded and I heard about from almost all the Moroccan diaspora folks I know and follow. The links here can allow donations and click below for wiring info (English and French Translations are in the insta link)
Moroccan Earthquake Relief - High Atlas Mountain Focus. A group of Moroccan American and Moroccan scholars in America started this to focus on the High Atlas region and rural survivors where the epicenter was. “The areas hit by the earthquake are in the High Atlas Mountains, an area that gets very cold and snowy in the winter, and is made up of many remote villages. The funds raised will go directly to families in the hardest hit areas to restore their houses or restart lost businesses. The regions of Ouarzazate, El Haouz, Chichawa, and Taroudant belong to a part of Morocco that still carries the scars of Indigenous marginalization, which the earthquake is going to exacerbate for years to come.”
Islamic Relief UK - Emergency Appeal Morocco: “Islamic Relief has extensive experience responding to disasters around the world. We recently helped more than 1 million people affected by the earthquake that struck Turkiye and Syria in February 2023. “
Note: I do not support, nor refer folks, to the Red Cross during emergencies because of a history of very bad management of their funds, the US and International organizations, especially in Haiti and beyond. The International Red Crescent is their name in Muslim countries.
Thank you. I shared this on my social media platforms.
